Guide to fly fishing in South Tyrol: the essential flies for success
Fishing in the Dolomites and the beautiful region of South Tyrol represents an exceptional experience for fly fishing enthusiasts. With majestic peaks and crystalline streams, this area in the heart of the Italian Alps provides an authentic and stimulating fishing adventure, thanks to the presence of prized fish species such as marble trout, grayling, and brook trout. The rivers and streams in South Tyrol, carefully managed with conservation in mind, offer ideal habitats for these fish, ensuring unforgettable experiences for anglers.
The Importance of Fly Selection
I began my journey in fly fishing in South Tyrol as a constructor of artificial flies, and becoming a guide was a pleasant consequence. Choosing the right flies is essential for success. Each type of water requires a specific strategy, making it crucial to have the right flies at the right time.
Nymph Fishing
Among the various techniques, nymph fishing has proven to be the most effective and fun way to tackle the waters of South Tyrol. This technique, when executed well, can yield satisfying results in all types of water, from rivers to small streams. My personal selection for nymph fishing consists of ten different nymphs available in all weights, which are ideal when fishing in the Italian Alps. Nymphs mimic the larvae present in the waters and are fundamental for fishing throughout the year.
Dry Fly Fishing
In small streams, dry fly fishing is predominantly based on the hunting technique. In South Tyrol, it is rare to see the classic “rise,” so it is important to choose flies that encourage fish to come to the surface. The Royal Wulff is the queen of dry fly fishing, along with terrestrials and classic parachutes. These generous flies are perfect for enticing fish to feed, especially in calm waters.
Fishing at Lake Neves
For those who enjoy fishing in the Dolomites, particularly “dry fly” fishing, Lake Neves is an excellent destination. This lake is populated by numerous graylings that challenge anglers in terms of technique and fly selection. When fishing at Lake Neves, I primarily use small dark flies, especially black ones, ranging from size 18 to 24, paired with a tippet size of 10 up to a maximum of 12.
An interesting trick that can make a difference is to dull the tippet by rubbing it in damp earth. This simple technique is useful when fishing in lakes with very clear water, as it reduces the chance that the line reflects light and raises suspicion with the fish.
