In early summer 2021, the rivers and streams across South Tyrol were running high and murky, thanks to the heavy rains and snowmelt. This presented quite a challenge, especially since I had the honor of guiding Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia and a legendary figure in both fly fishing and mountaineering.
Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Yvon was undeterred. His enthusiasm and resilience were inspiring, especially considering his age. We decided to tackle the Ega River, which was just barely fishable. This river is known for its challenging upper stretches, where the terrain is rugged and the waters are swift. It’s not an easy spot to fish, but Yvon was eager to give it a try.
We spent over half a day navigating the difficult sections of the river, casting our lines and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. It was a unique experience, not just because of the fishing, but also because of the opportunity to spend time with an icon like Yvon Chouinard. His dedication to the sport and his love for the outdoors were evident, making this trip truly special.
Fishing with Yvon wasn’t just about catching fish; it was about the experience and the lessons learned. His positive attitude, despite the challenging conditions, was a reminder that fishing is as much about the journey as it is about the catch.
This trip was a rare and memorable opportunity, one that I will cherish for a long time. It’s not every day that you get to fish alongside someone who has had such a profound impact on the world of fly fishing and outdoor adventure.
