The ultimate guide to fly fishing Isarco River. Target Trophy Pure Marble Trout in the Dolomites with expert guide Diego Riggi. Big water, big fish.

When it comes to fly fishing Isarco River (Eisack), you are stepping into the major league of Italian angling. Forget small, easy creeks. This is “Big Water”—a powerful glacial river flowing through the main valley of South Tyrol, guarding the biggest secrets of the Dolomites. Here, fishing transforms into hunting. The goal is not quantity; it is the trophy of a lifetime.

The Target: Kingdom of the Pure Marble Trout

The Isarco is one of the last true strongholds for the Pure Breed Marble Trout. While powerful Hybrids and massive Brown Trout (commonly 60-70 cm / 24-28 inches) provide spectacular fights, this is the river where you have the real chance to connect with a Pure Marble over 1 meter (40 inches) in length. Reality Check: While monsters exist, the solid average catch size ranges between 40 and 60 cm (16-24 inches). The meter-long fish is the dream, and fly fishing Isarco River is where that dream can become reality.

Tactics & Gear: Precision is Everything

The Isarco does not forgive mistakes. Success here requires technical mastery.

  • Euro Nymphing: The most productive method. We use long rods and thin tippets to dredge deep runs with a perfect drag-free drift.

  • Streamer Hunting: For those targeting the giant predator, we rig powerful rods (#8-#9 wt) with heavy sinking lines and large flies to trigger territorial aggression.

Logistics and Wading

Despite the river’s wild nature, car access to the spots is surprisingly easy. However, the wading is physically demanding. Large, slippery boulders and strong glacial currents require good physical balance and safe movement.
